Kein Wasser in Plastikflaschen kaufen.

The waste cycle: ebb and flow – time and tide

Ending Plastic – What you can do to stop the madness – 30-Two-Minute Solutions by Martin Dorey, Wilhelm Heyne Verlag Munich, by Moritz Bausch, Student Rossall School, Fleetwood, Great Britain

How to catch the wave of public interest with concerns about plastic pollution in our seas and oceans? Environmental activists, the movement around Greta Thunberg, social media groups, the writer Martin Dorey, etc. and the BBC series Blue Planet have followed this question.

It depends on YOU

The pollution of the oceans by plastic is a terrible thing. To fight it, the first step is to renounce plastic – or, even better, to banish plastic from our lives. This is easy to think, hard to implement. The author Martin Dorey (Time and Tide) has put together a series of two-minute solutions (#2minutesolution) that outline simple things that can be done.

Avoiding plastic products and packaging

Do not buy water in plastic bottles. Better use your own refillable bottle, filled with drinking water from the tap. Avoid cotton swabs with plastic shafts, plastic cutlery, plastic bags, disposable razors and plastic packaging. Not to forget wet wipes made of synthetic fibers and synthetic clothing that, every time it is washed, throws off millions of tiny fibers to find their way through the sewage system into the sea.

But it is not a question of evading and doing without. The change in lifestyle is linked to the measure.

That’s all well and good, where to start?

The writer Martin Dorey: „what good is a #2minutebeachclean if it takes an hour to drive to this beach? And what about all the fuel that was used there?“ If everyone spent two minutes a day, or even better an hour a month, cleaning up their local area, the garbage problem would be on a new basis. The beginnings are not visible, so far.

The solution is not: change plastic into paper or cardboard

The author Martin Dorey points out that ocean sculpture is a terrible thing, not the only thing that harms the environment. Paradoxically, the use of plastic reduces environmental damage caused by other materials and activities. For example, if plastic packaging is replaced by cardboard and paper, it will drive the mass conversion of natural forests into plantations to provide all the extra wood fibers that are associated with enormous CO2 emissions, wildlife losses and hydrological disturbances.

The solution is not: replacing synthetic clothing with cotton

When synthetic garments are no longer used, there is immediately a massive demand for cotton, which is far inferior to polyester or nylon in most environmental measures. The author Martin Dorey explains that it takes over 20,000 liters of water, for example, to grow one kilogram of cotton – as opposed to 17 liters for one kilogram of polyester – along with intensive pesticide and fertilizer applications. With typical yields of 500 kilograms of cotton per hectare, the global cotton harvest of 25 million tons per year takes up around 50 million hectares – 3-4% of the world’s arable land of 1.4 billion hectares. The production of cotton emits twice as much CO2 per kilogram as the production of polyester.

Conclusion: Advice has to do with „beating“ – the beginning is at every #2minute

Most of the advice in this book is sound. If the worst examples of disposable plastics, from polyester wet wipes to plastic straws are banned, a step is taken.

The truth is that „no more plastic“ is an unattainable and in many ways undesirable ambition. There is no patent recipe for a sustainable future, which means that a drastic reduction in material consumption would be a great benefit to the waste management cycle. The idea of the #2minutes by Martin Dorey is ingenious for everyone.
